Description
The Allen-Bradley 1769-SDN is a PLC that operates as a CompactLogix DeviceNet Scanner Communication Module. Through the 1769-SDN, communication between the CompactLogix controllers, the MicroLogix 1500 programmable controllers, and the DeviceNet devices is possible. This module measures 118x 87 x 35 millimeters in dimensions, including its mounting tabs which is 138 mm. This module weighs approximately 280 grams or 0.61 pounds and has a maximum Bus Current Draw of 440 mA at 5 Volts DC (2.2 Watts) maximum heat dissipation of 3.8 Watts.
The 1769-SDN should not be installed anywhere that contains volatile or corrosive gas, vapors, or dust in the ambient atmosphere. The 1769-SDN has an operating temperature of 0 to 60 degrees Celsius or 32 to 140 degrees Fahrenheit and it should not be stored anywhere in a corrosive atmosphere. The maximum cable distance between this module and the connected PowerFlex 4-Class drives is 10 meters. The maximum cable length must be 500 meters at 125K baud and 100 meters at 500K baud. The 1769-SDN cannot be located more than 4 modules away from the power supply, thus, it has a Power Supply Distance Rating of 4. Its DeviceNet power requirements are N.E.C. Class 2 90 mA at 11 Volts DC, 110 mA at 25 Volts DC, and 200 mA for 1.5 milliseconds. The 1769-SDN is able to read inputs and write outputs to and from slave devices, communicate with peer devices, and load programs to a 1764-LRP-based controller across a given DeviceNet network.
The Allen-Bradley 1769-SDN is a CompactLogix communication module. Specifically, this module is a DeviceNet scanner module used for exchanging information with fellow DeviceNet adapters and other DeviceNet enabled devices such as Adjustable Frequency AC Drives, Servo Drives and other equipment. This scanner serves as interface between DeviceNet devices and the programmable controller it is attached to.
The DeviceNet scanner established connection to the network by searching for properly configured DeviceNet adapter. The scanner sends strobe, poll, change of state, or cyclic I/O messages to solicit and deliver data to every device in the network. The received data is gathered and organized which is then accessed by the processor for implementing specific user logic related to the data collected.
As a minimum, RSLinx is required to browse the device from the network. The 1769-SDN does not require an external power supply as other module does. The backplane provides energization voltage to the module’s circuitry. Module installation is done by directly inserting t oany available slot in the controller assembly. When doing so, verify if the position of the module is within the required Power Supply Distance rating of Four (4).
During power-up, the module conducts self-test. When finished with the self-test, the scanner goes active and immediately executes the configurations setting it is programmed with. The default settings of the scanner module are communication rate of 125kbps and Node address 63.

Frequently asked questions
How does the 1769-SDN module communicate to slave devices?
The 1769-SDN communicates with devices through poll, strobe, change of state, or cyclic I/O messages.
What does 1769-SDN Error Code 91 mean? What should I do?
The 1769-SDN Error Code 91 (Bus Off) indicates the Bus off condition has been detected on the integral DeviceNet port. If you see this error check the DeviceNet connections and the Baud Rate. You should also check the system for possible sources of network interferences, such as a failed slave device.
Can this module be purchased with a warranty?
Yes, the 1769-SDN comes with a free one-year warranty from DO Supply, Inc.
What is this module’s heat dissipation?
The 1769-SDN dissipates around 440 milliAmps of heat at a voltage of 5 VDC.
Troubleshooting
The 1769-SDN DeviceNet scanner module in a typical configuration acts as an interface between DeviceNet devices and the programmable controller. The 1769-SDN over the DeviceNet work communicating as a master will:
- Read I/O to and from slave devices
- Communicate to various other peer devices
- Also upload and download to programs to select Micro Logix processors through the DeviceNet network
Additional parts used for testing
- 1769-L32E
- 1794-ADN
- 1794-TB3
- 1794-OA8
- 1784-U2DN
Note: RsNetworx for DeviceNet is required in this procedure, the 1784-U2DN is a USB communications device, this device is not required if you are able to talk to the DeviceNet work through other means.
- Visually inspect the card for damaged components
- Ensure the card is connected and locked in place using the locking/connecting tab on the top of the card.
- Be sure the correct revision is configured in the program.
- Error codes 98, 99 ,E2 ,E4 ,E5 will mean you will need a new 1769-SDN card check publication for specific details.
- Be sure the same node address is not being used on multiple modules.
- Check to see DeviceNet communications cable is terminated in all connectors. correctly, has 24v DC applied, correct length is being used and the correct resistors are being used in the right place.
- Check scanlist to be sure that your configuration is downloaded into the scanner.
1769-SDN Testing
- Power on all devices
- Open RsNetworx for DeviceNet
- Under the network tab select online then select the device network from the window.
- All the Device Network modules should come up, double click the device, you will be communicating through, we select the 1794-ADN.
- Once open select I/O summary and upload.
- Now under module configuration we are given a list of compatible modules for the 1794-SDN, the 1794OA8 was automatically selected.
- Download the configuration by clicking the download button.
- Now open the configuration for the 1769-SDN scanner module
- Go to Scanlist and upload, to move modules in and out of the scanlist us the button highlighted below, move the 1794-ADNinto the scanlist.
Note: To check I/O point check under the input and output tab
- DeviceNet configuration is done
- In RsLinx 5000 create a new program with the 1769-L32E
- Add the 1769-ADN to the compactbus local, be sure to use the ADN module with the correct revision selected.
- Download the program to the processor.
- Go to controller tags, open the output tab for the ADN module, open the command registry, set command registry to 1.
- Now open the “Local:1.O.Data” select Data[0], this will control the output for the 1794-OA8.
- Changing the value from 0 to 255 and all the output will turn on.
